De "Fabrique Nationale d'Armes de Guerre" of kortweg FN staat van oudsher bekend als wapenfabrikant. Minder bekend is het feit dat de Belgische firma uit Herstal bij Luik ook fietsen, motorfietsen en zelfs auto's bouwden. De eerste auto, een prototype, werd voltooid in 1899, en voldeed goed. Er werd besloten een serieproductie op te starten en in 1900 werd het eerste exemplaar uit een serie van 100 stuks gebouwd (de auto op de foto is er daar één van). Een behoorlijk aantal voor die tijd. De lichte wagen was voorzien van een dwarsgeplaatste (de eerste ter wereld?) 2 cilinder motor van 796 cc (boring x slag 75 x 90 mm) en leverde 3,5 PK. Hij had twee versnellingen vooruit en één achteruit. Hoewel het merk goede auto's bouwde en een behoorlijke reputatie opbouwden, bleven ze altijd in de schaduw van Minerva staan. Ook FN had veel last van de vloedgolf van Amerikaanse auto's in de jaren '20 en '30 en in 1935 werd besloten de autoproductie te staken. The "Fabrique Nationale d'Armes de Guerre" or FN factory was renowned throughout the years as a weapon manufacturer. It is less known that they also produced bicycles, motorcycles and even motor-cars. The Belgian company, located at Herstal near Luik, completed it's first prototype in 1899 as was tested with a positive result. The first car out of a series of 100 was built in 1900 (the car in the picture is one of those) and was equipped with a transverse (the first in the world?) 2 cilinder engine of 796 cc capacity (b x s 75 x 90 mm) and delivered 3.5 HP. It had 2 forward speeds and 1 reverse. Although FN cars were very well built cars and made a certain reputation for itself, it was always more or less overclassed by Minerva. FN too were seriously threatened by the flood of American cars in the twenties and thirties and the company took the wise decision to stop car production.
